Selling grocery, food and beverages

#grocery#food#beverages#allergens#expiry

Choosing the right category

Grocery products belong under Grocery & Food. Filing food under Home & Kitchen hides it from customers who are shopping for groceries, and it gives you the wrong fields — you would be asked for a colour instead of a weight.

How grocery products vary

Grocery items vary by how much is in the pack, not by colour or size. Choose the measure that matches how you actually sell it.

Sold byUseExample
WeightNet weightRice 1 kg / 5 kg — nuts 250 g / 500 g
VolumeNet volumeOlive oil 500 ml / 1 L — water 330 ml
MultipackPack ofSoft drink 330 ml, pack of 6 / 24
VarietyFlavourAlmonds raw / roasted / salted
ℹ️Note

A product is sold by weight or by volume, never both. The store will not let you list the same bottle under two different measures, because customers could not compare the prices.

Food safety fields

Allergens
Tick every allergen the product contains, from the standard list. Customers filter on this, so leaving it blank costs you sales.
Dietary type
Vegan, gluten-free and similar labels customers filter by.
Halal certified
Set it when the product carries a certificate.
Shelf life
How long the product lasts — a property of the product.
Storage condition
Ambient, chilled or frozen.
Expiry date
Belongs to the batch you are selling, not to the product line. Two cases of the same oil bought a month apart carry different dates.
⚠️Warning

Allergen information is a safety disclosure. Choose from the list rather than typing it into the description — a customer filtering for "nut-free" will never see free text.

Coffee is the one exception

Coffee can vary three ways at once — weight, roast and grind — because that is how coffee is genuinely sold. Most grocery products use two.
